The McDonald Observatory is located in western Texas in the high and dry Davis Mountains. When the 82 inch telescope was completed in 1939 it was the second largest in the world. Today the largest telescope is the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at 11.1 meters, which makes it one of the largest in the world.
We made a special trip to Texas to visit the McDonald Observatory in 2004. We signed up for an evening of viewing through the historic 82 inch Otto-Struve telescope, the observatory’s original telescope. The evening began with a dinner and talk. After viewing we were able to spend the night in the astronomers’ quarters.
