Visiting the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in West Virginia was a side trip while spending time with one of daughters who lived in Norfolk, Virginia. This massive radio telescope is located in a remote area bordered by National Forest and the Allegheny Mountains. The town of Green Bank is in the United States National Radio Quiet Zone where authorities limit all radio transmissions to avoid interference with the GBT.
The GBT began operation in 2001 having replaced an earlier one from 1961 that collapsed in 1988. The telescope operates at meter to millimeter wavelengths. The dish has a diameter of 100 meters and weighs 8,400 tons.
